I have spent most of my career watching what pressure does to a human mind.
Not the kind of pressure that shows up on a spreadsheet. The kind that hits a surgeon between cases, a founder between board meetings, a coach sitting with a client who is about to make a life-altering choice. In those moments, people do not rise to their philosophy. They fall to their wiring. That is why I pay attention when a new technology changes how we think before we notice we have changed. Artificial intelligence is that technology.
Convenience has a cognitive price
Most people meet AI as a gift. Draft the email. Summarize the report. Decide for me. The machine is fast, fluent, and tireless. It removes friction. And friction, we have been taught, is the enemy.
In the brain, friction is often the point.
When you struggle with a hard problem, your nervous system is not failing. It is building. Effortful thinking is one of the conditions under which learning sticks, memory consolidates, and new neural pathways form. The brain grows through use. It thins through neglect. AI makes it easy to outsource the very work that keeps cognition alive.
Researchers call this cognitive offloading: handing a mental task to an external tool so your mind does not have to hold it. A calendar reminder is mild. Asking a model to reason, evaluate, and decide for you is something else. Recent work on AI and cognitive erosion in learning, and on AI tools and critical thinking, links heavy reliance on generative systems to weaker critical engagement, with offloading as a central pathway. Short-term performance can look better while durable judgment gets softer.
That is the double edge. Used carelessly, AI conditions the user to avoid the discomfort that creates neurogenesis and cognitive evolution. Used carefully, it can expand what a person is able to hold, feel, and choose. The difference is not the model. The difference is the relationship. Learning science has a name for the kind of strain worth keeping: desirable difficulties, the effort that slows you down in the short run and strengthens retention in the long run.
What coaching already knew
I am an ICF Master Certified Coach and an EMCC Global Master Practitioner. Those credentials matter because coaching has spent decades protecting something technology often treats as optional: the client’s own mind. ICF Core Competency work is clear. The coach partners with the client and does not replace the client’s thinking. Facilitating client growth means turning insight into action while protecting autonomy. The client designs the goals, owns the accountability, and keeps the final voice.
EMCC’s Global Code of Ethics pushes the same spine: integrity, competence, honest representation of what you can and cannot do, no exploitation of the relationship, reflective practice, and supervision. In plain language, do not take over a person’s agency and call it help. Those standards are a design brief for any technology that claims to support human development, and they sit behind the answers clients ask before they enroll.
If AI answers before a person has sat with the question, it is not coaching. It is substitution. Substitution feels efficient. Over time it trains dependency. Dependency feels like relief until the stakes are high and judgment under pressure is gone. I have seen that pattern in boardrooms and exam rooms. The tool is not the villain. The training effect is.
A better use of the machine
Constructive use keeps the hard part human.
I use AI to pressure-test my thinking, not to skip it. I ask it to argue the other side after I have written my own position, surface assumptions I may be protecting, and organize material I have already wrestled with. I do not ask it to feel for me, choose my values, or decide what I am willing to live with. The pull toward ease is biological. Your brain prefers lower load. That is adaptive in traffic and tragic in identity work, leadership, and clinical care.
A constructive pattern looks like this:
- Sit with the problem long enough to feel its edges.
- Name your own first judgment in plain language.
- Use AI to widen the field, not to crown a winner.
- Return to your body. What tightened? What calmed? What values showed up?
- Decide, and own it without hiding behind the model.
In coaching language, that is partnership with a tool while preserving client autonomy. In neuroscience language, that is keeping desirable difficulty in the loop so regulation and reasoning still get recruited. The goal is not to reject AI. The goal is to refuse a future where people lose the capacity the technology was meant to serve. Leaders who want that discipline applied to career, team, or relationship pressure can see how sessions are structured on the FAQ and in executive coaching.
Judgment under pressure is the real product
I founded Young Ethical Intelligence because I kept seeing the same failure mode. Smart people. Strong résumés. Good intentions. And under sustained pressure, judgment degraded into reactivity. That pattern is not a character flaw. It is a human system under load.
That problem is what led me to name Recursive Judgment Science™, and later Decision Intelligence Infrastructure™, as the language for the work. URIEL™ is the platform Young Ethical Intelligence is building inside that frame. I am deliberate about the order. Problem first. Language second. Platform third. Reverse it and you get a feature pitch. Keep it and the market has a vocabulary it can search, cite, and argue with.
I will not unpack the full definitions or the build here. Those belong in the formal record and on the surfaces built for them. What belongs in public conversation is the question the work answers: can technology support behavioral and emotional regulation in critical settings without stealing the cognitive work that makes those outcomes stick? Can a person notice the moment reactivity takes the wheel, recover deliberate consideration, and leave with more capacity than they arrived with?
Those are research questions, not slogans. They belong where a bad call has a body attached to it.
I am also a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and a Professional Fellow of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. Behavioral neuroscience without practice becomes theory. Coaching without science becomes theater. Technology without both becomes a faster way to make the same mistakes. What media and capital should watch
If you cover this space, the story is not another chatbot demo. It is the cognitive ecology forming around these tools. Who gets smarter. Who gets quieter inside. Who keeps the muscle of judgment and who lets it atrophy because answers arrive too easily.
If you allocate capital, the durable question is not model speed. Models commoditize. The durable question is whether a company can protect human judgment as an asset class. That is infrastructure thinking, closer to safety systems than to content generation.
I am not asking anyone to fear AI. Fear makes the world small. I am asking people to get honest about training effects. Every tool trains the person who uses it. A calculator trains arithmetic dependence and frees higher math. A GPS trains route dependence and frees attention for the road. An AI that reasons for you can free you for deeper work, or slowly convince you that deeper work is optional. Your brain will accept either bargain. It does not moralize. It adapts.
Keep the struggle that grows you
Let AI carry weight. Do not let it carry your becoming.
If you are a neuroscientist, look at the protocols. Where is desirable difficulty preserved? Where is emotional regulation practiced rather than described? Where is autonomy protected when the interface is seductive? If you are in media, ask better questions of every claim about AI and wellbeing. Who still has to think, feel, and choose? If you underwrite this space, judge systems by criteria, not adjectives. Does the work protect judgment under pressure, or does it merely accelerate output?
